gabon.jpg Precious Woods expanded to Gabon in 2007 and acquired majority interests in the companies Compagnie Equatoriale des Bois CEB and Thanry Gabon Industrie TGI, which are domiciled in Libreville. The two companies employ about 700 people. CEB manages existing forest in Eastern Gabon in a concession area of 600 000 hectares. Around 200 000 m3 of round wood are harvested annually.

CEB was the first company in Gabon to operate under the principles of sustainable forestry management. The company took on a pioneering role in Gabon akin to that of Precious Woods in Brazil. It operates a concession of some 600 000ha and produces about 200 000 m3 wood per year. CEB produced Central Africa’s first comprehensive forest management plan and the company’s practices had a major bearing on the forestry legislation currently in force in Gabon. Under Gabonese law, the forest must be managed on a sustainable basis. Having acquired CEB, Precious Woods will safeguard its ecological profile and ensure that it is not sacrificed to short-term interests.

The company offers its employees and their families housing, electricity, drinking water, shopping facilities, medical care and modest leisure facilities. These services are of a high standard compared to other companies of this sector.

The population living within and close to the concession receives financial support for specific projects, based on every m3 of wood exported from their region. Each village elects a panel which defines the village’s needs, draws up corresponding projects and applies to the company for support. That same panel is subsequently responsible for implementing the projects and for the accounting. The village panels jointly elect a committee to put forward local communities’ interests to CEB. Precious Woods intends to retain and build on CEB’s existing social commitment as opposed to implementing completely new ideas.

CEB operates a saw mill in the forest concession and a small moulding factory in Libreville. TGI operates a veneer factory in Libreville.

In 2001 and 2004, CEB has been Keurhout and ISO 14001 certified. Precious Woods Gabon, Compagnie Equatoriale des Bois (CEB), was awarded Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for its forestry activities in Gabon in mid-October 2008. This certificate attests that the company's forest concession in Gabon – comprising an area of over 600,000 ha – is managed in a sustainable manner.
