Monitoring of forest stand dynamics and forestry operation
Forest stand dynamics
We are currently hosting the large-scale project P3FAC on forest growth dynamics. A COMIFAG project conducted by Nature +/ CIRAD / Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech
Installation and monitoring of more 657 permanent plots in partnership with research institutions. In these plots, impact monitoring and monitoring of forest growth is carried out after logging.
Harvesting / post- harvesting quality control
Every logging team has his own compliance officer who checks every logged area on compliance with the standards.
The Brigade des contrôles des norms (CEB compliance team) does randomly check most of all harvested zones to ensure that all standards have been respected.
Annual FSC and PEFC audits
After logging operations, data regarding built infrastructure and all possible impacts are collected, with map analysis and field measurement, as well as information on the efficiency and quality of the operation.
In average, 33 plots for the monitoring of forest growth (15 ha each) and 5 plots for the monitoring of harvesting impacts (200 ha each) are measured annually.
Annual FSC and PEFC audits
Tree growth / ha / year in managed area
4,3 m³/ha/ year (average of all species)
1,69 m³/ha/ year (average of commercial species)
Information abtained by monitoring of permanent plots
Tree growth / ha / year in non-managed area
1,2 m³/ha/ year (preliminary results of all species)
Further analyses and additional measurements of permanent plots are still in progress
Number of species harvested / year
Use of biomass
No, project for a future co-generation plant
100% in co-generation plant
Anti-poaching activities and control
The company maintains an anti-poaching monitoring unit of 3 to 4 person. The unit patrols on its own and in cooperation with the forest authorities, the police and the national park authorities. (ANPN) A closer cooperation with the ANPN is under negotiation and will be implemented in 2019.
Anti-poaching patrols 2018:
Days of patrol
Car patrols km
Boat patrols km
Foot patrols km
Third party arms seized**
The company maintains gates on all access points to the management area and has an agreement with the local police to avoid poaching.
The company has an environmental monitoring project with local communities. They report on the action of intruders inside and outside the management area.
The company maintains an anti-poaching monitoring team of 4 person patrolling the whole management area by car every day.
There are also 160 local “monitors”, residents of communities, who forward information on hunting and other environmental crimes.
Basis of calculation: average value of 300 tC/ha
* Number of CEB employees checked / Number of third-party individuals checked inside the concession area during joint operations with authorities
** Arms seized from third-party individuals checked inside the concession area during joint operations with authorities
Number of communities in surrounding areas
44 communities inside the concession area
The company supports 9 communities with more than 500 families
