Omvong

orginates from the forests that grow in the Congo Basin in Gabon

Omvong

Source

Omvong is available in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Congo Basin of Gabon. The tree attains heights up to 20 – 30 m and diameters between 60 - 100 cm. The trunks are rather straight and cylindrical.

Appearance

Freshly sawn Omvong has a brown to red brown color, darkening to dark brown or dark red brown after exposure. The 40 - 80 mm wide sapwood is lighter and is easy to distinguish from the heartwood. The wood grain is straight, sometimes oblique and interlocked. The texture is medium coarse.

Processing properties

As a result of the high density and the interlocked grain, the machining of Omvong cannot be done easily. The wood has a really blunting effect on the tools. The use of hard metal tools is strongly recommended. Pre-drilling is necessary. The gluing properties are quite good, but there is no experience with finishing. Drying is difficult, with high risk of cracking and deformation.

Application

Thanks to its durability and hardness, Omvong is used for heavy constructions outside, for example fresh water applications, bridges, decking, sheet pilings and piles.
