orginates from the forests that grow in the Congo Basin in Gabon

Sapeli

Source

Sapeli is available in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Congo Basin of Gabon. The tree attains heights up to 50 m and diameters normally between 70 cm and 120 cm. The trunks are straight and cylindrical and often have small buttress root boards.

Appearance

Freshly sawn Sapeli has a pink brown color, darkens after exposure to deep red brown. The heartwood often has an attractive golden shade. After cutting, Sapeli smells like cedar. The 60-80 mm thick sapwood has a grey to yellow pink color and is easy to distinguish. The wood structure is straight to irregular and often interlocked, causing a beautiful regular streaking pattern on the radial faces. The texture is medium coarse.

Processing properties

The machining of Sapeli can be done easily. Pre-drilling is recommended. The gluing properties are quite difficult, but the finishing results in a very smooth and closes surface. It dries rather quickly, with risks of cracking and deformation.

Application

Sapeli is mentioned on the SKH publication 99-05 which means that the timber is approved for production of KOMO certified door and window frames, doors and windows. Furthermore it is also used for facades, interior uses like joinery, parquet, floors and stairs.
